Frame-by-frame animation for Untitled at the Denver Art Museum, January 2023. This dreamlike animation flickers between symbols of early womanhood to scenes of female rage and responsibility. Rotoscoping public domain footage from Joan Crawford’s Mildred Pierce to the first werewolf movie ever made (Wolf Blood, 1925), Monstrous Femme sympathizes with the journey from innocence to experience under patriarchy.

Over the last few years, queer and women led skate collectives (such as Unity Skateboarding, There, Queer Skate Alliance and Skate Kitchen) have exploded in popularity, occupying space for themselves in a historically exclusionary sport that centered and celebrated white, straight cis men. While skateboarding has always been “an activity for dissidents, non-conformists, and those who feel like they don’t belong in the confines of conventional society”, these skate groups promote a radical inclusivity that hasn’t always been present. They are working towards making skate parks safer and encouraging spaces for queer, trans and non binary folks, and they often form the base for community organizing and activism.

This piece is called ‘Working Girl’. In this 1970s-inspired illustration, a Black woman sits at her desk, her expression revealing a sense of interruption, suggesting the constant intrusion upon her space in a patriarchal, white supremacist society. Yet she is self assured, reclaiming financial autonomy, and surrounded by symbols of traditionally male-dominated spaces. By reclaiming these symbols, she shows her resilience against systemic inequalities, her self empowerment, and her refusal to pander to respectability politics.

This piece is called “Weekend Afternoon”. Two teenagers find peace and connection in the sanctuary of a bedroom. Their poses offer a glimpse into their personal journeys of self-discovery and self-expression. One lies on her back, examining her legs against the wall in a moment of introspection and self-reflection. The other, lying on her front, gazes out of the window, longing for freedom and adventure. Together, they remind us of the importance of embracing self acceptance and personal liberation.

This piece is called “Sword Thrower”. A woman appears visibly bored, surrounded by circus-style swords embedded in the wall. The swords, traditionally associated with masculine strength and aggression, symbolize the societal constraints placed upon the woman. Her disinterest marks those expectations as mundane and stifling. The female sword thrower in the corner prompts us to consider the power dynamic between them- is she reinforcing a heteronormative gaze that views women as passive objects, or are they dually resisting and queering gender norms together?
